چکیده
The aim of my paper is to describe and evaluate different conceptions holism in Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. I distinguish three readings holistic elements this work: i) Minimal Holism (E. Anscombe, M. Black, D. Pears); ii) Moderate (J. Conant, C. Diamond, G. Ryle); iii) Radical (G. Bar-Elli, Kremer, P. A Visual Representation of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus
In this paper we present a data visualization method together with its potential usefulness in digital humanities and philosophy of language. We compile a multilingual parallel corpus from different versions of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, including the original in German and translations into English, Spanish, French, and Russian. Using this corpus, we compute a similarity me...
متن کاملDescriptive Atomism and Foundational Holism Compositionality and Semantic Properties
While holism and atomism are often treated as mutually exclusive approaches to semantic theory, the apparent tension between the two usually results from running together distinct levels of semantic explanation. In particular, there is no reason why one can’t combine an atomistic conception of what the semantic values of our words are (one’s “descriptive semantics”), with a holistic explanation...
متن کاملBeyond Atomism
Contemporary metaphysicians have been drawn to a certain attractive picture of the structure of the world. This picture consists in classical mereology, the priority of parts over wholes, and the well-foundedness of metaphysical priority. In this short note, I show that this combination of theses entails superatomism, which is a significant strengthening of mereological atomism. This commitment...
متن کاملMysticism and Nonsense in the Tractatus
Upon reading Wittgenstein’s Preface to his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, one could easily be forgiven for thinking that the book is in a similar line of business to any other work of analytical philosophy. True enough, Wittgenstein’s professed aim of drawing a limit to the expression of thoughts is exceptionally ambitious; and one could not fail to be struck by the immodesty of the claim that...
متن کاملBeyond Atomism
In this note, I present a problem for a certain natural view about the structure of the world. I show that this view is committed to a particular strengthening of atomism, which I call superatomism. Superatomism has some counterintuitive consequences (e.g. it rules out whatMarkosian [] calls the ‘pointy view’ of simples). I consider some ways of avoiding this commitment, and draw some additio...
